Differences Between DTF Printer And Screen Printing

differences between DTF printers and screen printing

DTF printers and screen printing are widely used by clothing manufacturers for printing patterns on fabrics. In particular,DTF printers,as a more advanced printing technology, not only retain the advantages of screen printing but also have their own unique features, making them the top choice for clothing printing.Next,TanYu Printer will introduce the differences between DTF printer and screen printing. If you are struggling to decide which machine to purchase,we hope this article will be helpful to you.

Different Principles

DTF Printer(Direct to Film):Using an inkjet printer to directly print patterns onto PET transfer film, then applying heat-activated adhesive powder, and transferring the pattern onto fabric via heat pressing.Related reading:What is DTF printer

Screen Printing:Each color requires a separate screen, with ink squeezed through the screen mesh onto the substrate using a squeegee.Relies on physical screens, suitable for spot color printing, can only print one color at a time, and requires precise alignment for multi-layer color registration.

Different Use Processes

How to use a DTF printer

Preparation – Power on printer & curing oven (preheat to preset temp).

Design – Create/import CMYK design in graphic software (mirror image).

Setup – Load design in DTF software, perform nozzle check/alignment.

Printing – Printer automatically applies ink & hot-melt powder on PET film.

Curing – Film passes through oven to bond powder with ink.

Transfer – Heat press film onto fabric (150-170°C for 10 sec).

Finish – Cool briefly, peel off film to reveal printed design.

How to use screen printing

Design Prep: Split design into single-color layers (CMYK/Pantone); output film.

Screen Prep:Stretch polyester/nylon mesh on frame.Coat with photosensitive emulsion, expose to UV light via film, then rinse to reveal pattern.

Printing:Secure substrate; align screens for multi-color prints.Apply ink with squeegee (each color separately, drying between layers).

Curing: Air-dry water-based inks; heat-cure plastics/textiles (160–180°C).

Cleanup: Wash screen post-print to reuse.

Different Materials

DTF printers are primarily used on materials such as cotton, polyester, blends, leather, and even textured fabrics.Examples include clothing, hats, and shoes.Related reading:Applications of DTF printer

Screen printing is most suitable for cotton and cotton blends;other fabrics may require additional preparation. It is worth noting that with special treatment, screen printing can also be used on metal or glass.

Different effects

Since the DTF printer transfers the pattern from the transfer film onto the target material’s surface via heat pressing,it may feel rubbery to the touch, but this sensation disappears after multiple washes.

Screen printing,on the other hand,is directly printed onto the target material, resulting in a softer feel. The pattern will not peel off even after multiple washes, which is superior to DTF printers.

Different speeds

Since screen printing requires creating printing templates based on the pattern before printing, with one template per color, this significantly reduces the speed of screen printing compared to DTF printers, especially for complex and multi-color patterns.DTF printers, however,do not require these processes. You simply import the pattern into the computer, and the DTF printer quickly prints the pattern.Modern DTF printer machines are equipped with automatic powder shakers and curing ovens, enabling the entire workflow to be completed without manual intervention, significantly improving speed.

The Tanyu DTF printer machine is equipped with an automatic powder shaker and curing oven. The printed patterns automatically undergo powder shaking and curing, with the entire process completed automatically without manual operation.Tasks that previously required two people to complete can now be done by a single operator, with zero errors.

Minimum order

Since screen printing requires the creation of templates in the pre-production phase,it is only suitable for large-volume orders to offset the cost of template production. However,DTF printers are vastly different;even for single-item orders,DTF printers can print and generate profit.Related article:Advantages of DTF printer

Different Patterns

Screen printing requires creating templates corresponding to the colors of the design, making complex designs more challenging and multi-color designs more expensive. However, for bold logos, fonts, and simple graphics, screen printing can handle them easily. The DTF printer has no such limitations;it can quickly and easily transfer vibrant,multi-color patterns onto clothing, even complex designs with multiple colors.

If you are a clothing entrepreneur,I recommend choosing a DTF printer machine, because it produces more vibrant and colorful prints,is simpler to operate than screen printing, and is not limited by order quantity—even single-item orders can be processed. What are you waiting for?Contact us now!
