the difference between dtf and dtg printer

DTF and DTG are both printing machines capable of printing patterns on clothing, but they also have significant differences in terms of principles, printing materials, printing processes, speeds, and printing effects.Below,TanYu Printer will explain the differences between DTF and DTG from five aspects.

Principle

DTF stands for Direct to Film. Its working principle involves first printing the pattern onto a PET film, then applying heat-activated adhesive powder, and finally transferring the design onto the fabric via heat pressing.Related reading:What is DTF printer

DTG stands for Direct to Garment. Its working principle involves the DTG machine directly using inkjet technology to print water-based ink onto pre-treated fabric(primarily cotton)without the need for a transfer medium.

Summary:DTF first prints the design onto a transfer film, then transfers it to the fabric via heat pressing, while DTG directly prints the design onto the fabric.

Printing Materials

Both DTF and DTG target fabrics as their printing materials, but DTG has higher requirements for the fabric.DTG is suitable for pre-treated cotton,pre-treated cotton/polyester blends, and some pre-treated polyester fabrics.

DTF printers have no such restrictions and can be used on untreated cotton, polyester, silk, denim, wool, leather, spandex, and 50/50 blends.Related article:Application of DTF printer

Summary:DTG-compatible fabrics are generally compatible with DTF printers, but not all DTF-printed materials are compatible with DTG.

Printing Process

DTF Printing Process

1.The DTF printer prints the pattern you set onto the transfer film.

2.The transfer film then automatically passes through an automatic powder-shaking device and a curing oven to ensure the hot melt adhesive powder adheres to the transfer film.

3.The pattern on the transfer film is transferred to the garment using a heat press.

4.After cooling, peel off the transfer film.

How To Use DTF Printer

DTG Printing Process

1.Apply a pre-treatment solution to the fabric to help the ink adhere properly and produce accurate colors.

2.You must dry the garment to prepare it for printing.

3.The DTG printer uses a specific inkjet technology to directly spray water-based ink onto the fabric.

4.After printing, the garment is heat-cured to stabilize the ink.

Speed

Although the DTF printing process involves an additional transfer step compared to DTG,DTF significantly outperforms DTG in terms of efficiency.DTF does not require time or cost for pre-treatment of garments before printing, nor does it require post-printing drying of the ink. These steps are essential in the DTG process.Modern DTF printers are equipped with automatic powder shaking devices and curing ovens, requiring no manual intervention throughout the process. In contrast,DTG printer requires operators to load and unload each garment into the machine, significantly reducing DTG’s operational efficiency.

Printing Quality

Since DTF printers transfer patterns onto the surface of the garment, the colors appear more vibrant and colorful. However, the patterns may feel slightly plastic-like to the touch initially, though this sensation diminishes after multiple washes.Related reading:Advantages of DTF printer

In contrast,DTG directly injects ink into the fabric fibers, preserving the garment’s softness and breathability. The print seamlessly integrates with the fabric, resulting in a softer appearance and feel.

Both DTF and DTG are suitable for small-batch orders. If you desire a softer, lighter print effect,DTG is ideal for high-quality,100%cotton fabrics and designs with soft edges that blend seamlessly with the fabric. If you seek a more durable,feature-rich printing option, especially for offering a wide variety of products without the limitations of DTG,you can choose a DTF printer.
